Update

Bem vindos de volta! É um prazer e um privilégio tê-los comigo nessa viagem. Desde a última postagem o projeto evoluiu muito, mas ainda há muito caminho pela frente. Como os métodos já foram todos descritos nos posts passados, esse será mais um update que um "how-to". Vamos lá: - Welcome back! It´s a pleasure and a privilege to have you along in this trip. The project has come a long way since the last post, but there is still a long way to go. As the methods were described in yhe previous posts of the series, this one will be more of an update than a how-to. Here we go :

Material adicionado para ser lixado e se chegar à forma final. Aproximadamente 3 mm de fibra e resina com massa foram aplicados - Material was added to be sanded down to the final shape. Aproximately 3 mm (1/8 inch) with fiber, resin and bondo were applied

Entramos aqui numa segunda fase da superfície: ela foi lixada para tirar o principal, mas sem chegar a refinar nada. Eu percebi que a fibra estava fina demais pois estava chegando ao papel alumínio em algumas partes. Se ficasse adicionando material em cima desta fibra, distorceria a forma original. 2 mm de material a mais podem não parecer muito, mas equivalem a 26 mm no modelo de escala real. É muita coisa! Por isso, preferi separar a "carroceria" de fibra do substrato de isopor e adicionar material (reforçar) pelo lado de dentro. Além disso, chegou a hora de cortar fora o excesso que está cobrindo a área do interior do veículo para que o mesmo possa ser construído. - Here begins the second stage of surfacing: the bulk of the material was sanded down, but without any fine tuning of the surface. I realized the fiberglass was being sanded off down to the aluminium foil in some parts. Were I to keep adding material on top of the fiberglass, the original shape would be distorted. 2 extra mm may not seem like much, but it adds up to 26 mm (just over 1 in.) in the real scale model. That´s a lot! So, I decided to separate the "body" from the styrofoam substrate and add material (reinforcement) on the inside. Besides that, it´s time to cut out the excess that´s covering up the vehicle´s interior so that it can be built.

Ainda que tenha sido aplicado de forma relativamente crua, o papel alumínio cumpriu bem seu trabalho de isolar o isopor da resina. Veja como a maioria continua intacta. É possível também ver a consequência de não utilizá-lo, pois onde houve contato, a consequência foi a dissolução. -  Even if it was relatively crudely applied, the aluminium foil did its job of isolating the styrofoam from the resin. It´s possible to see the consequences of not using it since there was dissolution where there was contact

Chão e carroceria novamente juntas. Usei Durepoxi para a fixação inicial e fibra de vidro para a definitiva - Floor and body together again. I used Durepoxi (a sort of two-part epoxi "dough" that can be easily found and manipulated) for the initial joining of the two and fiberglass for the definitive.

Fibra nas caixas de roda e o interior, que no modelo consistirá somente de uma tampa, pois usarei-o como um cofre para guardar moedas e troco; juntar dinheiro para construir um de verdade. -  Fiberglass on the wheelwells and interior, which will consist of  a plug in the sclae-model, because I ecided to use it as a piggybank; save money to build a real one :D

Com as rodas no lugar, é possível começar a visualizar o produto final. Excitante! - With the wheels in place, it´s possible to begin to visualize the final product. Exciting!

Os detalhes - The details

Saudações! Obrigado pela sua companhia até aqui! Desde o início muito foi feito, mas como exposto na última postagem, entramos numa etapa do projeto cujas ações são delongadas por sua natureza. Estou quase acabando a aplicação de fibra de vidro ao modelo, mas ainda faltam duas pequenas seções. E o pior é que, pela forma como a fibra funciona - aplicar, retirar excesso, aplicar, retirar excesso... - não há como evitar essa demora. A não ser que você esteja se dedicando exclusivamente ao projeto, essa etapa irá durar um bom tempo. Para não ficar parado, porém, eu decidi dar início a uma subseção do projeto e aproveitar o tempo de secagem da fibra. Assim, fiz ao longo do fim de semana as balanças inferiores da suspensão. Se aplique nelas, já que elas são peças que ficarão expostas e podem acabar com todo o seu trabalho duro. Essas são as primeiras peças que fiz e não serão definitivas, pois, ainda não estou satisfeito com o resultado. Pretendo aproveitar as "mangas de eixo", porém. Greetings! Thanks for keeping us company so far! Since the begining a lot has been done, but as it´s been said previously, we´ve entered a phase on the project on which each step is naturally morose. I´m almost done applying the fiberglass to the model, but there are still 2 small sections left. The worst of it is the way it all works - apply it, trim the excess, apply, trim, apply, trim... - there is no way around it. Unless you are dedicating yourself exclusively to the project, this phase will last a while. In order not to stay still, I decided to start a subsection of the project and seize the fiberglass drying time. So, I built the lower suspension arms along the weekend. When you do, put in the effort, as they are exposed, make-or-break parts of the model. These are the first ones I´ve done and likely won´t be final because I´m not satisfied with them yet. I intend to reuse the "spindles" if they turn out not to be, though.

Foram usados 8 palitos de dente para as balanças inferiores e serão usados mais 8 para as superiores. É bom escolhe-los à mão, um por um, pois alguns são tortos, outros menores e outros ainda lascados. Ainda que parte deles fique escondida, a seleção manual irá economizar trabalho mais à frente. 8 toothpicks were used for the lower arms and 8 more will be in the uppers. It´s better to choose them manually, one by one, as some may be crooked, others undersized and others still, chipped. Even if part of them remain out of sight, doing this will save some work later.

O paquímetro é essencial no projeto pois garante a máxima precisão. Ele foi usado nesta etapa para medir o diâmetro do anel de montagem das rodas. The calipers are essencial in the project to guarantee precision. In this phase it was used to obtain the wheel´s mounting ring diameter.

Essa roda foi retirada de uma caminhonete de brinquedo comprada de um supermercado. Nada especial, mas o desenho simples me satisfez, especialmente por ser a primeira maquete. This wheel was taken from a toy truck, bought in some supermarket. It´s nothing special, but their simple design is satisfactory, speacially considering it´s the first scale model.

Eu adaptei esse compasso para fazer cortes circulares: substituí a lâmina por um prego que afiei com lixas. I adapted this compass to perform circular cuts: I replaced the graphite lead with a regular wood nail, that was sharpened with sandpaper.

Para garantir a simetria e a uniformidade entre as peças, usei fita dupla face para que as peças fiquem juntas durante os cortes e acabamentos. To make sure the parts would be symmetrical and uniform, I used double-sided tape, so that the pieces would  stick together during cutting and finishing.

   

A largura externa, marcada pelos espaços adjacentes aos triângulos, é a total do modelo. Estes por sua vez são as bases para formar os braços de suspensão. The external width, marked by the spaces adjacent to the triangles, is the model´s total. These are the basis to form the suspension arms.
