Os primeiros passos - The first steps

A busca de um sonho as vezes amedronta quando se percebe o quão grande ou complexa a tarefa é - o tempo que se é necessário investir, as habilidades requeridas, o conhecimento demandado e principalmente o custo financeiro podem assustar e desestimular-nos ao ponto de desistência. Quantos sonhos seus já ficaram pelo caminho? Quantos você nem começou a realizar? Dar um passo de cada vez pode ser a melhor forma de se chegar lá. É mais ou menos como levantamento de pesos na academia: não adianta tentar levantar o maior no primeiro dia; é preciso ir se fortalecendo de pouco em pouco até se conseguir força suficiente para atingir o mais pesado. To seek a dream is sometimes very daunting: when you realize just how big or complex the task is - the necessary time invested, the required skills, the demanded knowledge and specially the financial cost can scare and discourage us to the point of desistance. How many of your dreams have fallen by the wayside? How many didn´t you even attempt to realize? Taking one step at a time may be the best way to get there, It´s a bit like lifting weights at the gym: it´s no good trying to lift the heavyest on your first day; it´s necessary to get stronger bit by bit until one´s strong enough to lift the biggest one.


Nesse mesmo espírito, para me ajudar a atingir meu sonho de construir um carro de projeto próprio, eu decidi fracionar o sonho. Assim, vou aprendendo as habilidades que preciso e as refinando, uma a uma, a começar pelo que primeiro nos toca, a carroceria. In the same spirit, to help me realize the dream of building a car of my own design, I decided to fraction the dream. This way, I will learn and refine the skills I will need, one by one, starting by what first meets the eye, the body. 

Não entrarei aqui no mérito do design, por ser secundário à essa altura. A sua execução será o foco. Aqui, mostrarei o processo de transformação de minha ideia abstrata em um produto final, que se pode tocar, mover, analisar, modificar. Esse produto final será uma maquete em escala 1:15 (um centímetro na maquete corresponde a 15 no possível carro) e está sendo construído para aprendizado, puro e simples. I will not delve in the merits of the design because it is secondary at this point. Its execution will be the focus. Here I will showcase the process of turning my abstract idea into a final product, which can be touched, moved around, analyzed, modified. This final product will be a 1:15 scale model (1 centimeter in the model corresponds to 15 in the would-be car) and is being built for learning, purely and simply.

Ainda que pareça simplório, esse método pode ser extrapolado para criações maiores ou menores, com maiores níveis de detalhes, e não se restringe a carros: use-o para dar vida a qualquer criação sua. Por morar no Brasil e não ter acesso a recursos mais sofisticados como Clay automotiva ou a uma impressora 3D, resolvi usar o que tinha à mão. Me inspirei em outros construtores que pesquisei na internet, em livros e revistas, do passado e presente. Os materiais usados por cada um variam, mas os resultados, com dedicação, podem ser os mesmos. As simplistic as that sounds, this method can be extrapolated to bigger or smaller creations, that require higher or lower levels of detail, and isn't restricted cars; use it to bring any of your creations to life. Because I live in Brazil and don't have access to more sophisticated resources like automotive clay or a 3D printer, I had to use what I had at hand. I got my inspiration from other constructors I researched on the internet, in books and magazines, past and present. The materials used by each vary, but the results, with the proper dedication, can be the same.

Após a ideação, eu construí o carro no computador, num programa CAD. O bom disso é que se pode alterar tudo até chegar no resultado desejado sem gasto de material e dinheiro. After the ideation stage, I built the car in the computer, using a CAD program. The great thing about this is that you can alter anything until you reach the desired result without any material or money expenditure. 

Em seguida, "fatia-se" o modelo para se obter seções planas. Em outras palavras, se inicia com um modelo em 2 dimensões, que é então construído em 3D no ambiente virtual para então ser transformado em várias seções planas, 2D. Essas seções serão impressas, cortadas e remontadas, como num quebra-cabeças. After that, the model is sliced to obtain flat sections. In other words, you begin with a 2D drawing, which is then modeled in 3D in a virtual environment, only to be turned into several flat, 2D sections. This sections will be printed, cut out and reassembled, like a puzzle. 

A impressão deve ser feita de todas as seções juntas para se garantir a manutenção da escala correta em todas as peças. Essa impressão é colada em outro papel, este mais grosso e que consegue manter rigidez estrutural suficiente para apoiar o material que preencherá os vazios. Esse material será lixado para chegar à forma final do projeto. A minha escolha foi o isopor por ser barato e fácil de se encontrar. O isopor é vendido em diversas espessuras, e esta deve ser levada em consideração quando se fatiar o modelo. Também deve ser contada a espessura do papel estrutural, já que ela pode esticar o modelo com a soma de todas as seções. The printing of all the sections must be done at the same time, in one go, to ensure the correct scale is kept throughout the parts. This print will then be glued on another piece of thicker paper, one that can maintain enough structural rigidity to support the material that will fill the voids. This material will be sanded to get to the final shape. I chose styrofoam for being easy to find and cheap. It comes in different thicknesses, so bear that in mind when slicing your model. Also, take the hard paper thickness into account, as it will stretch your model because it adds up in the end if you don't.
